Successful Play can be defined as children engaged in safe and focused activity that stimulates brain and physical development. Successful Play engages the development of the whole child in a safe, engaging, and loving environment. The Mental, Physical, and Emotional needs of the Whole Child are met during Successful Play.

Successful play environments can easily be created in four steps.

1.
Declutter! Think MACY’s windows!
Your baby will be so proud when she is able see a specific toy and make a choice to move towards it. She will love seeing easily accessible toys and build confidence when she is able to move towards the toy and get it. For example, an infant will squeal with delight and roll to reach the puffy scarf placed nearby, or a crawler will puff a deep breath then move towards the a goal, pull up on a sturdy shelf, and reach a ball.

2. Simplify! Save your money for college and raid your kitchen cabinets!
The best toys to engage your baby’s imagination are open ended. Simple toys are the basis of understanding cause and effect. Think Low-Tech Toys that don’t “do” anything. The expensive electronic toys are great for immediate gratification, yet they are quickly passed over for a metal bowl or a bucket of balls. Open ended toys allow your baby to be mentally and physically active in figuring out many ways to play. Examples are wooden blocks, nesting cups, bowls, and clear Tupperware. For older kids art materials, or dress up are great.

3.
Challenge! Successful life skills training start now!
How do you teach your child to be proud of himself or better yet to be busting at the seams with confidence? Repeated struggle and frustration. When babies first learn to crawl they usually scoot a little then look at adults and laugh (check-in) and then repeat. They are so proud. It took a lot of struggle and frustration but they overcome and now they are everywhere! Keep giving him activities to engage his innate perseverance and eventually he will experience confidence related to overcoming the obstacle. This confidence will generalize to other areas of his life easily. One example of a challenge is to put a wiffle balls or wooden clothes pins in a coffee can with a plastic lid in the play area. Sit back and wait with your camera to see that look on his face when he gets it out! That will be one for the Scrapbook!

4.
Sit back and Enjoy! The work of children is play.
You’ve done your work now let your sweet one go crazy. When you have finished creating a safe and stimulating play area your baby will gain competence by playing alone for short periods of time. As you sit back and watch you will see your baby bloom as her focus increases, her frustration tolerance grows, and she gives you that big smile and squeal that says “Look at me mommy! I did it!” What more could you want for your child as you know she is safe and stimulated mentally, physically, and emotionally.
